Today in Science Fiction Exploration, we talked about spoilers, and under what circumstances it is OK to spoil a movie. We suggested that mostly how long the movie has been out, how popular it was, and the audience to which you are speaking factor into whether or not a movie is spoilerable. For example, a movie like Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980 and is considered a classic. The reveal that Vader is Luke's father is iconic, and should not be considered a spoiler. Some of us said that they don't mind spoilers, as it detracts very little from the overall experience of watching a movie or playing a video game. It also matters how much a movie or television series matters to you. If you care a lot about Star Wars, than you would most likely be angry if someone spoiled it for you, but if you do not like Star Wars, you probably couldn't care less.

12/12/16 Maeve McVeigh

Tensions were high in Sci Fi. Today in class we had round three of voting for our brackets. The 6 remaining characters were Spiderman, Steven Universe, Wolverine, Iron Man, Dr. Horrible and Spock. One of the closest rounds was when Wolverine went up against Iron Man. At first Wolverine had an advantage over Iron Man with the amount of supporters. However, multiple voters were persuaded to come to Iron Man's side, continuing him to the final round. The other characters that also advanced to the final round were Spiderman and Spock. Next week will be intense as we vote for our final champion. We're also curious to see who accumulated the most points throughout the entire bracket, as well as what kind of sandwich they will get.

 

Blog Nikita O'Sullivan 12/9/16

Today in class we watched the new Spider Man trailer. It is also sci Friday so students must read or watch a scientific piece. There is no Sci Friday log this time. There will be a final project on a character you read for sci Friday. Students are also allowed to read Fahrenheit 451, as long as you were incorporating some type of science fiction in your work. The reading is due Monday.

Luek G-M 12/7/16 Blog

Today we learned more about the foil of Clarice and Mildred in the book Fahrenheit 451. These characters had opposite structures that made them so different. For example Clarice was full of life and died while Mildred is not full of life but lives. By examining these foils we can further learn about character development in science fiction texts. For the rest of the period we got to continue working on our texts for the discussion question on what the FBI did to ray Bradberry and how it relates to the book. Reading the text about the FBI watching him was actually quite interesting because it showed just how paranoid the us was. They believed that Bradberry's book could truly corrupt the mind reading it and following the ideas of communism.

12/6/16 - Sam Galgano Blog Post

Today in class, everyone split up into two groups. One group talked about how Mildred and Clarisse are foils of each other and the other group talked about how Montag and Beatty are foils of each other. One group was on one side of the room and wrote on the white board while the other group was on the opposite side of the room writing everything down on the other white board. Each group had to come up with points regarding how the two characters were foils of each other and they needed quotes from the book to support their claims. The group that explained how Montag and Beatty are foils of each other shared their information first. There wasn't enough time for the side with Clarisse and Mildred to present to the class, so they're going to present tomorrow. Before the bell rang, Mr. Rivers reminded everyone of the assignment that he had posted on Google classroom, which is to read an article that talks about Bradbury's experiences with the FBI. You have to select one specific piece of evidence from Section 1 that relates to a specific piece of evidence in the article.  The response should be 1-2 paragraphs long.

For our Sci-Friday project, we watched texts that involved the remaining sic-fi characters, and discussed, using the texts we had viewed, why a certain character would be victorious in the next round.

Yes hi this is my blog post for the day, here we go.

Today in Sci Fi we continued our discussion on Farenheit 451's dystopian aspects as of Part 1 (The Hearth and the Salamander). That didn't last long and we got more into the idea of "foil" characters in texts.
A foil character is a character whom presents an opposite personality or drive towards another character, usually to provide some positive conflict in the plot. You see this a lot in and outside of sci-fi for such a reason: It makes the characters interesting.

Like someone in class explained, you can't have two Batman's, they'll just agree on everything and be edgy together and it wouldn't be fun. At all. Thus two characters with opposing reasoning, such as Spok (I know it's spelled "Spock" I just like saying "SPOK" it sounds ridiculous) and Doctor Mccoy with their respectable forms of logical and emotional reasoning provide hemispheres for even types of "good guys" in a story.

That was about it really, we got off on a tangent listing these foil characters as a class till we ran out of time. I personally thought it was cool but kinda annoying how many shows have foil characters of emotion vs logic, it gets repetitive and far less innovative. There are many less covered debates such as "Freedom vs peace," or "Anarchy vs tyranny," or anything really. Any sort of dichotomy could be used for foil characters and it bothers me that everyone picks the easiest one.

Luis S.- The Heir of Breath: JOHN EGBERT

On John Egbert's birthday, he received a copy of a popular game called sburb. Little did he know, this game would destroy the world. He went through hardships in the game such as losing his father, and being distracted by his friends always texting him. He unknowingly gave the power of a god to his #1 Enemy, when he put to sleep by an alien who was contacting him. This caused his friend to put her dog into a floating orb of light called a kernal sprite. This takes the form of anything it touches, but with a ghost tail. However, enemies in the game called imps receive the power of a players sprite. A particular imp called Jack Noir gained the power of a god, and was bent on killing the children. When john went to sleep, he fell asleep on a quest bed, where he was killed by Jack Noir. His woken body was dead, but his dream self was still alive. the dream self took the place of the woken John Egbert, and gained the power to manipulate the wind. As far as character goes, he has gone through a lot, as far as I've read Homestuck. In the beginning, the main recognizable thing about him was that he loved Nick Cage, and especially the movie Con-Air. Towards the middle, on his birthday, he was re-watching con air with his friend Jade. In the middle of the movie, he realized that he didn't like it as much as he used to. This change was huge, because before, he used to reference the movie every chance he had. We learn a lot about John Egbert as a character. His passion of trickery has led him to be one of the best pranksters in all of entertainment. He learned ecto-biology, a temporal, and genetic science. He had to make clones of himself, his friends, and family, then send them to the past, and future, so they could live out their lives. When he was younger, he subconsciously vandalized his own movie posters with pictures of jesters, and harlequins, and could not see the additions to his posters. His father believed that John liked clowns, so he bought clowns, and put them all over the hose. John was less than pleased by the clowns and believed his father was the one with the obsession. John was given the nessesary character development, and emotional strength to rank high on the list of best sci-fi characters.

GLaDOS (Portal 1+2)

She was supposed to be the greatest, most efficient supercomputer and AI of her time, capable of managing the entirety of Aperture Laboratories’ underground facility, managing and reviewing thousands of test subjects. And that, she did, but much like the supercomputer EPICAC from Kurt Vonnegut’s short story of the same name, she did it seemingly hesitantly, and indeed, absolutely alone. Once she killed the entire human staff, that is.

I think GLaDOS is one of the greatest sci-fi characters because she is an absolutely conflicted being herself in a story reflecting its own conflict. Throughout the games she shames the main character for being a smelly, stupid human, with feelings and distracting emotions. But then you eventually notice something about her. She holds grudges, she hates, and she’s hesitant. Despite her hatred and logical destruction of humans, she is very emotional in her own way. I won’t spoil anything, but this also induces a change of her at the end of the story, furthering my point.

On top of this, she plays the roles of both the hero and villain between the two Portal games, reluctantly in the former.  Nonetheless, by the end you see GLaDOS change from a monotone testing apparatus with no regard for human life to a passionate, merciful friend of the protagonist.

GLaDOS: You look ugly in that jumpsuit. That's not my opinion; it's right here on your fact sheet. They said on everyone else it looked fine, but on you, it looked hideous. But still what does an old engineer know about fashion? Oh, wait, it's a she. Still, what does she know about - oh, wait. She has a medical degree. In fashion. From France. 

GLaDOS: You know, I'm not stupid. I realize you don't want to put me back in charge. You think I'll betray you. And on any other day, you'd be right. The scientists were always hanging cores on me to regulate my behavior. I've heard voices all my life. But now I hear the voice of a conscience, and it's terrifying... because for the first time it's *my* voice! I'm being serious. I think there's something really wrong with me! 

Universe..... Steven Universe (Heather)

Steven universe is a new popular kid cartoon. You may be asking, why a cartoon character? Well, it's because of the issues this show deals with. Steven is a relatable character. He is childish, sweet, caring, but he doesn't always make the right choice. He has doubts, and he always wants to be his best....and he loves food. Everyone can take a piece of him. When we get serious, he represents greater things. He deals with abusive relationships, his mother dying at birth, learning his powers, trying to be as good as others, dealing with death, feeling like everything is his fault...ect He is the best character due to his relatablity, and his flaws. Having a perfect character sucks. He is the new. He has awesome powers like a shield, healing, floating, and who knows what else. Its amazing cause as he learns about himself, so do you. He came from the best--the rebellion leader-she died so he could live. Now he is forced to live up to her, and he is always reminded he took her away from everyone. Character have even told him that they wish she was here instead of him. I's awful, but he copes. He is sweet, he tries to help others, he is what we all wanna be, and all our insecurities. Steven is funny, he loves puns, and so much more. Steven makes his own choices, he doesn't like what his mom do make him who he is. He fights to be better than her.

Luke Gm captain falcon

Captain Falcon is one of the most popular sci fi video game character of all time. He became popular through the addition into the super smash brothers video games. The games Captain Falcon was first seen in F-Zero. A racing game with falcon as the main hero. His full name is Douglass jay falcon and he is one of the best bounty hunters and racers in the galaxy. The reason he is one of the best science fiction characters is because of the fact of how cool he is in his video games. This is a guy that is respectable when played as. In the game super smash brother his move set is unique and stylish. His characters is fast and outloud which are qualities that show the kind of nature of this character. This is somone who gets up in people faces and is just overall respectable. With his most well known line "Show me your moves". Its no wonder why this man is so popular.

Sarah Manning (Orphan Black) - Alex Schuessler

Sarah Manning is one of the best and most interesting sci fi characters out there. 

Many people would be freaked out by seeing their doppelgänger jump to their death leaving all identification behind, but not Sarah she is the one character in Orphan Black who is a true opportunist (she stole the dead woman's identity). Her troubled past and involvement with some questionable characters and groups has shown that she is far from perfect.

 A problem with many Protagonists is their lack of flaws, Sarah is a mess of a human being who has had her daughter taken from her because of it. She hides her true feeling and thoughts from others until they explode in a fit of blind emotion and confusion, and because of her stubborn nature she pushes everyone out of her life in order to save them from what she feels she has to go through. The way she handles her emotions and relationships is relatable to reality and connects her to the viewers in a personal, relatable way. She does what she feels she has to do for who she loves even if she has to fight, manipulate, lie, or sacrifice herself to get there.  

 If you have not seen Orphan Black *SPOILER ALERT* the  plot basically revolves around clones. Although all the clones are significantly different, Sarah shows that just because you share DNA doesn't mean she has to agree with or trust her fellow clones. Her existence shows that although she is a clone she is human, and she won't be used as a science experiment. Sarah is overall a crude, funny, loyal and rebellious character who has everyone questioning everything they believed about human cloning. 

Spiderman is the best scifi character

Spiderman is one of the most well-known superheroes in American history. One of the reasons he resonates so well with fans, is that he comes from humble backgrounds. An orphan who lives with his aunt and uncle, Peter Parker is an outcast amongst his peers.  He struggles to get by, unlike other superheroes like Iron-Man and Bat-man who are born into wealth, and loved by everybody. Despite his humble beginnings, Spider-man accomplishes amazing things using both his powers, and his vast intellect. Since his creation in 1962, Spider-man has been involved in thousands of stories, many of which being iconic.

Spider-man has a wide set of powers, including super-strength, a sixth sense which tells him when danger is near, and the ability to stick to walls. He also uses web shooters mounted on his wrists to swing from building to building in NYC.

Why Yoda is the best Sci Fi character of all time Mason

    Yoda is actually dope, He is very wise he gives Jedi advice who are kinda enlightened people. He is like a bad ass Buddha, at 1st you think hes just a little green dude but then he uses the force and makes you respect him. Star Wars is one of the most popular Sci Fi series of all time and Yoda is big man boss of it all. Lets just say you tried to mug Yoda on the street for some dumb reason, He would wreck you and then say some cool philosophical stuff to get you thinking, help you up and then you would use his words of wisdom to get your low life back together. Not only is Yoda a real smart and enlightened guy he is also crazy good with a light saber.  Yoda embodies the Jedi's principles and keeps it cool 100% of the time.

Samantha Galgano - Iron Man

Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man, is, in lack of better words, pretty cool. I mean, not only is he a philanthropist, extremely witty, and rich (which is an added bonus), but he is also extremely intelligent!!! He graduated from the electrical engineering program at MIT at the age of 17. At 21 his parents were killed in a 'car accident', which resulted in him inheriting Stark Enterprises. Fast forward to basically the first interesting scene in the first movie, where Stark visits his international plant to attend a field test. Things blow up, shots get fired, and a piece of a landmine gets lodged near Tony's heart. He is then kidnapped and brought to Wong-Chu's camp, who demands that him and another kidnapped physicist create advanced weaponry for his forces. Since Tony knew that he couldn't live with this shrapnel close to his heart, he and the physicist create the first true Iron Man, which was equip with a magnetic field generator to prevent the metal from reaching his heart. This suit was based off of a blueprint of a battle suit that Stark had been developing in previous years. The whole suit was based around an iron chest plate to protect his new 'heart', hence why the name Iron Man is pretty fitting. This suit, which Stark didn't realize at the time, would later become a prototype that would lead to the production of 7 (!!!) more suits, each sustaining an increase in effectiveness and in technological advances. In conclusion, Iron Man is 10/10.

Okabe Rintarou is the best Sci-Fi character

        Okabe Rintarou (also known to himself as Hououin Kyouma) is a self proclaimed mad scientist, the inventor of the Phone Microwave time machine, and the funniest most entertaining character in Sci-Fi. He founds a group called “Future Gadget Laboratory” (which is really just a room on top of a small store where he experiments with stuff with his friends) in which he is Lab Member 001. In the beginning of the show, he introduces himself to people as “Hououin Kyouma the mad scientist”, constantly acts as if there's an “Organization” after him (going as far to pretend to be on the phone to combat this nefarious organization), and frequently laughs maniacally. He does all this because he thinks it gives him the cool aura of being a mad scientist, even though everyone around him knows it's just delusions and eccentricities. This is a link of him introducing himself and his lab members.
        Okabe becomes a more rounded out and in depth character when he has to face the consequences of having invented a time machine. Because of the time machine, his childhood friend, Mayuri, dies, so he goes back in time to save her. As he tries and fails so many times to prevent his dear friend's death, the mad-scientist persona falls away, and he is revealed to be a sympathetic caring man.

Chris Vachris- Master Chief

Honestly..... what can't you say about this guy. At the age of 14, John recovering from augmentations killed two adult, full grown ODSTs with his bare hands and severely injured the others. He stopped the Ur-Didact a forerunner from long ago who was out to turn the human race into Prometheans, a group of cybernetic/biological soldiers with no will of their own except to follow the orders of the Didact. He stopped the Covenant's attempted activation of the halo rings which would've vaporized all sentient life in the universe. He stopped the activation of another halo as well as the activation of all the halo's from the ark in Egypt AND he destroyed the Scarab, a covenant war machine many felt was unbeatable. But enough about his accomplishments, Chief fought through a terrible upbringing. Kidnapped at an early age to become a Spartan, Chief accepted his fate and embraced it. At age 8 he took lead of all the young spartan candidates and incapacitated 4 marines guarding a pelican drop ship that could've gotten them out of the snowy forest they were dropped in. Additionally he displayed great moral values, defying the order given to him that they leave the last person to the pelican behind. Chief even powered on after he lost his friend and fellow spartan Sam in a HAVOK nuke explosion and his squad mate Solomon was viciously vaporized. Even his closest friend, the AI known as Cortana, was lost to rampancy effectively leaving Chief. But this was all expected right? I mean, chief does have Forerunner DNA in him, the very alien civilization that controlled all life in the universe and were responsible for life being created on Earth. His preservation, bravery, and straight up luck in my opinion make him one of, if not the greatest sci-fy characters of all time.

Maeve McVeigh- Frank

       Frank the demonic bunny from Donnie Darko is one of the most intriguing science fiction characters out there. Without saying much, he still proved to be most powerful throughout this film. One of his first lines immediately draws you to him. He informs Donnie that the world will end in "28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds". He proves to be a very mysterious character and leaves you wondering whether his intentions are good or evil throughout the film. During the film, he continuously reappears. He convinced Donnie to do things such as flooding his own school and burning down a house. You never understand what Frank is trying to accomplish by visiting Donnie in particular and having him perform these acts, which drags you in even more to him. Frank also has the ability to time travel which any sci fi character would be envious of. Because of this ability he is able to show Donnie the parallel universe that can be stopped. The man beneath the bunny suit contributes to the mystery that is Frank as well. When the mask is taken off a young man with a bullet hole in his right eye is revealed. This leads you to more questions. If not for Frank, what could've been, may have not been prevented. The enigma that is Frank will forever be a captivating sci fi character.

Luke Skywalker - Brittany Goldberg

Luke Skywalker is the greatest sci-fi character of all time because he is a hero who always does the right thing. Once he found out Princess Leia was in trouble he knew he had to rescue her. He trained as a Jedi knight and is one of the best Jedi’s of all time. He is a great brother, a loyal friend and even managed to forgive “his Father”.

Luke fights the dark side and risk his life to keep the force safe. When faced with the choice to join his Father or die he chooses death. He makes the sacrifice and it ends up working for him. He is truly a good person. He learns how to be a Jedi quickly and can fight as well as his Father.

We find out in the latest episode that he tried to train his nephew to be a Jedi.  He now trains Jedi’s and passes along his knowledge.  I think he may feel he has failed because his nephew chooses the dark side over being with the force and becoming a Jedi warrior.  Luke is a great warrior but he is also a really great person. I think what makes him the greatest is the fact that he is both. He really cares and people  other beings care about him.

Tiernan Doyle- Dr. Buckaroo Banzai: A Man, A Myth, A Legend.

It is theoretically impossible to describe The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, in less than four words. It's a story convoluted with dimensions, alien races, and an all around wacky mix of adventures. What can be done, though, is describe the greatness that is the movie’s main character, Dr. Buckaroo Banzai. Here's a quick rundown of what he has done: He’s a neurosurgeon, an experimental physicist, a secret agent, a comic book and video game star, and is the lead in his own rock band. Not only that, but the text has been added onto by numerous comic books and novels. You can’t get any better than that.

The thing about Dr. Banzai is that he is so organized and has such a cool mind, he can perform each of these activities, all while helping save the world from nuclear annihilation brought on by an extradimensional civil war. He’s also got his own pack of friends, "The Hong Kong Cavaliers", who help him throughout the text and always have his back in times of trouble. He has a way of helping those in dire need and can bring the best out of anybody, from a helicopter flying child who knows his way around an AK-74, to a lady who’s down in the dumps and has nowhere else to go.

I have always felt that Dr. Banzai is the greatest sci-fi character for the reason that he sets himself up as one of the greatest role models for ordinary people ever seen in cinema history. While he is not the strongest or the most heroic, he has the greatest batch of humanitarian abilities anyone can ever have, rather than other cliche sci-fi strengths and tropes.

He shows us valuable life tips such as keeping organized and being stress free in a time of immediate crisis, as seen with how he handles the threat of the world ending from an inter dimensional civil war, having a close knit group of friends who look out for each other 24/7, as seen with his group "The Hong Kong Cavaliers", and helping those who cannot help themselves, such as most of the other characters in the text. He also is a perfect example for those who feel that life can go in multiple directions and that people don’t have to slave over a single road all of their lives, with Buckaroo Banzai being described in the text as a man, “going several directions at once.” He’s a character we all can really relate to, and is relatable especially to most Spartans, seeing how the entire text takes place in New Jersey.

Buckaroo Banzai has saved the world, achieved the maximum human potential that is possible, and has perhaps the greatest and most unique resume ever. He’s down to earth and has the perfect mix of geniusness and quirkiness. That’s why I feel he is the greatest sci-fi character of all time. Buckaroo Banzai is not just a savior to humans, but for all beings good at heart.

Jake Lepore - Thanos

When thinking about the Marvel universe and how vast it truly is, who comes to mind as one of the most powerful beings? The Hulk, Spider-man, Wolverine, Captain America? None of these humans come close to the power and intelligence of Thanos from the planet Titan. Since birth Thanos had always stood out from the rest of his peers, this was due to birth defects he had developed making his skin purple and later in his life his size, god like. Thanos is most famously know from the comic series Infinity Gauntlet, which was when he killed off half of the universe with the power of the infinity stones to impress his love, Death. When the remaining heroes discovered what had happen, with the help of Adam Warlock they decided that they would take Thanos down. When it came time to battle this evil Titan, every hero was killed like it was nothing and in the end what was Thanos's biggest downfall was his ego and thirst for power. To Marvel fans Thanos is unstoppable, with a height of 6' 7'' and weighting in at half a ton, any sort of attack from him will end in death and destruction. When it comes to battle Thanos has his strength and intelligence to fight his foes, but in some instances he has the infinity gauntlet. The infinity gauntlet contains all six infinity stones which are space, mind, reality, power, soul, and time. With all of the stones together Thanos is unstoppable and any beings above or below him cannot defeat his power. That is why Thanos is the greatest science fiction character of all time, with his power every other character would be a joke to him.

Jacob Sedar-Tommy Oliver

Dr. Tommy Oliver better known as Tommy is the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger, the Mighty Morphin White Ranger, the Zeo Ranger V Red, and the Black Dino Thunder Ranger is the best science-fiction character of all time, because he has battled his three past ranger forms, defeated his evil clone, and had led group of 10 Red Rangers against the remnants of the Machine Empire.
In the twenty-seventh of Power Rangers Dino Thunder named Fighting Spirit Tommy went into coma, his three past ranger forms have his Dino Gem which he needs to live as it has bonded to him. Each fight has him reminisce on his past accomplishments as a Power Ranger, from defeating Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd to King Mondo. At the end of the episode he defeats all of the rangers and awakes from coma. This shows that he is willing to do anything to get back in the game.
In episode 43 of Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers Season 2 called Return of the Green Ranger Part 3 Tommy is forced to fight an evil clone of himself created by Rita Repulsa. After losing the first two fights and his White Tigerzord losing to the Dragonzord, he fights the clone in hand-to-hand combat. At the end, Tommy then wins destroying the clone. This shows he is stronger than any creation Rita and Zedd can create.
In the thirty-fourth episode of Power Rangers: Wild Force called Forever Red Tommy returns once again after several years to lead a group of rangers to stop General Venjix from activating Serpentera, a machine created by Lord Zedd to destroy the Earth.
